Home – Charleston, SC
It’s good to be back in the Lowcountry. I slept late in Atlanta – I think I’m still on Central time. Courtnay made cheese toast with gouda cheese from the dairy they visited outside of Knoxville + yogurt and strawberries AND English Breakfast tea. I love Courtnay’s faucet in her kitchen that delivers hot water for tea.
This trip has included NO traffic issues, that is, until I entered and left Atlanta, GA. I put ice in the cooler and ran by the Oak Grove market for a mahjong snack – Cowboy caviar seems appropriate since I’ve been back and forth across Texas these past 3 weeks.
I’ve started a new audiobook: Homeschooled by Stefan Block, narrated by the author. After being homeschooled for 5 years by his unstable mother, Stefan returns to public school in the 9th grade. He is teased and bullied by his classmates as he struggles to fit in socially and academically. He compares the shame and pain of the bullying to a covalent bond – strong chemical bonds that share particles. A very vivid comparison to this science teacher! This book is a “Read with Jenna” pick.
I had a good phone call with June as I drove down I-20. She has finished the 13-week grief share program and found it very beneficial. Richie has participated in this as well in another location and also recommends it. Wondering if we should look into bringing this to St. M.
The towns along Highway 78 outside of North Augusta are so familiar and charming to drive through – Williston, Blackville, Denmark, Bamberg. The street running through tiny Bamberg is lined with large photos of the local high school seniors – a very gracious tribute to their accomplishments, I think.
Fran texted that she would like to bring me Sonic for supper – a lovely offer since my fridge and cupboards are mostly bare. Fran is a Diet Coke aficionado, and Sonic serves one of the best.
I got home around 3:30 and Eddie arrived a while later to turn on all the water faucets and work on the broken downstairs toilet. Fran arrived with supper around 6:00 and we talked a long time about my worship experience yesterday in Tupelo.
Neighbors Silvia and Andrew and 3yo John came over and our conversation turned to the challenges of the end of school – get three educators together (me, Fran, Silvia), and there is no shortage of stories to share.
Favorite quote from Jane Eyre: “Prejudices, it is well known, are most difficult to eradicate from the heart whose soil has never been loosened or fertilised by education: they grow there, firm as weeds among stones.”
Songs on replay today: “Better Me For You” by Max McNown and “Black and Gold” by Sam Sparro. Give them a listen and let me know how you like them. I like using the replay button to get a closer listen to the lyrics.
Book recommendation: Why We Read by Shannon Reed (for book lovers).
I want to post more later with some reflections about stuff and maybe include some travel tips. There are so many other places I want to visit in the US. I like having my car and not being tied to a schedule.
The only thing that would have made this trip better would be having John beside me in the car, critiquing road construction, knowing all the strange things on the back of big trucks (“What is that, John?”), and identifying the make and model of just about anything on the road. And, being able to text a thought or story to Krisi and getting a speedy funny reply. Or, getting a phone call that starts with, “Where are you?”
